Because of this, psychic reading has become increasing popular, fascinating many.

One technique used by mentalists, psychics and fortune-tellers that is getting a lion’s share of the mass media is Psychic Cold Reading.

Psychic Cold Reading is a term used to refer to a series of techniques or strategies used by live psychics or mentalists or even by fraudulent psychics and mediums to determine or express details about another person.

This reading is dubbed as “cold” due to the fact that there is no need for any prior knowledge of the client, as the readers will basically use their powers of careful observation of the client's appearance, movement, characteristics and behavior in giving a series of guesses based on knowledge of probabilities, deductive reasoning and the use of general statements that are readily accepted by large numbers of people.

Learning Psychic Cold Reading Techniques

Set the Scene. In this, the cold reader will make the client open to a cold reading, eager to make connections and help the reader easily make observations. The reader will also typically try to elicit cooperation from the subject and manage its expectations by giving brief explanations on what they may receive from the reading.

Making Observations. The cold reader must meticulously take note of the client’s important characteristics such as:

gender and age ethnicity weight, apparent health, personal hygiene and any noticeable disabilitiesany scars, bruises or skin blemishesany evidence of smoking, drug taking, alcohol use, etc.clothing, hairstyle, jewelry and tattoos, body decorationsany animal or human hair, grasses, mud, oil, or stains on the clothesvoice quality (#( regional accent, pitch, pace and modulation )#)vocabulary or expressions use

Use your Deductive Powers of Reasoning. Using the observations you’ve done, the cold reader must make some highly probable guesses about the client.

Stereotyping and Focusing. Typecast or try to label your client into a particular category of person. These could be based generally on gender and age appearance

After typecasting your client, you then focus around areas stereotypically of concern to people in this category, and also around any specific deductions that can be made based on observations of the client. For instance, a middle aged woman is likely concerned with family, their health and jobs.

Named after the American showman P.T. Barnum, "Barnum statements" are statements that seem personal, yet actually apply to many people.

Such examples of Barnum statements are:

"I sense that you are having problems with a friend or relative."
"You're sometimes insecure, especially with people you don't know very well."

Fishing. The cold reader will state some very specific yet seemingly improbable statements that may or may not be true of the client. Then if the statement turns out to be true, the strength of the "hit" will greatly make an impression on the client, and the statement will be clearly remembered.

In fishing, make sure to use fishing statements that are not too improbable but which are likely to be generally true for many people like:

"You used to own a brown dog."
"I sense something about a car crash."

Shotgunning. The reader slowly offers a huge quantity of very general information some of which are very likely to be correct, near correct or at the very least, provocative or evocative to the client. Then the reader observes their client’s reactions (#( especially their body language or facial expressions )#). From there, they narrow the scope, acknowledging particular concepts and refining the original statements according to those reactions to promote an emotional response.

In Shotgunning, you might include a series of vague statements such as:

"I sense a heart problem with a father-figure in your family, a father, a grandfather, an uncle, a cousin ... I'm definitively sensing chest pain here for a father-figure in your family."

"I see a woman with blackness in the chest, lung cancer, heart disease, breast cancer that isn't a blood relative . . . Someone around when you were growing up, an aunt, a friend of your mother, a stepmother...
